South Africa has begun to look at the implication of Covid-19 pandemic on its universal healthcare system. The South African National Health Insurance (NHI) has proven itself to be the answer to ensuring that all South Africans have free and fair access to health facilities. In this research, the authors examine how the NHI effectively managed during the COVID-19 pandemic , and what it meant for ordinary South Africans. Lastly, it also critically analyses how a universal healthcare system has been implemented in other countries and the success it has had for their health infrastructure.
