The National Health Insurance Fund in Kenya refine strategy to extend coverage to informal workers

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) staff attended a week long management retreat (20-24 March) organised by the Social Protection and Public Finance Management Program  to discuss the NHIF institutional strategy with a focus on extending coverage to informal sector workers. During the retreat, NHIF received valuable insights from international best practices in extending coverage, enabling them to identify key priorities for their strategic plans in the coming years. Additionally, there was an in-depth assessment of NHIF functions to further enhance their functions. Furthermore, the retreat included discussions about the newly designed maternity cash benefit, which was developed with the support of the project. This benefit specifically aims to assist women employed in the informal economy who either enrol in NHIF or the free-for-all Linda Mama scheme, operated by NHIF. This benefit ensures access to free pre-natal, delivery, and post-natal care for these women.
