The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) plans to launch a new project to rebuild the health care system in Ukraine. The department is ready to spend up to $ 45 million on this purpose.
“The main goal of activities to restore and ensure sustainable development of the public health system is to strengthen the ability of the Ukrainian government to identify, prevent and respond to public health threats,” – explained USAID representative.
The program is supposed to be implemented within five years and up to $ 45 million is expected to be spent.
Some reforms have been carried out in the health sector in recent years, however, the COVID-19 pandemic revealed persistent problems in the ability of Ukrainian institutions to effectively respond to health threats, according to the USAID document about the project. The pandemic has exacerbated the already significant shortcomings in the Ukrainian mental health services.
Prerequisites for declining health status of Ukrainians included harmful habits, under-use of health carre and a lack of confidence in the public system.
In February, the United States Agency for International Development requested an additional $ 8.5 million for a healthcare reform project in Ukraine, for which $ 28.8 million were already allocated.
