UNICEF helps Kazakhstan to expand access to medicines through lower prices

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health announced an increase in the list and volume of vital drugs and antiretroviral vaccines. The agreement was reached during a visit to UNICEF’s procurement center in Copenhagen, ahead of the 74th WHO Regional Committee for Europe session attended by Kazakhstan’s Health Minister.

As part of the country’s pharmaceutical supply strategy, Kazakhstan is expanding its cooperation with international organizations, including UNICEF. During the visit, Health Ministry representatives, with UNICEF support, discussed concrete measures to increase accessibility and diversity in the procurement of essential medicines for the population.

This partnership aims to ensure timely drug deliveries, optimize budget spending, and improve patient coverage. The experience of previous collaborations has already demonstrated tangible benefits—in 2023, Kazakhstan saved approximately 1.67 billion tenge through the procurement of medicines for seven key drug categories.

For the 2025 procurement cycle, Kazakhstan anticipates not only an expanded drug list but also further cost savings. To strengthen long-term cooperation, the Ministry of Health will update its memorandum with UNICEF, focusing on enhancing efficiency in planning, supply chain management, and distribution processes.

UNICEF’s global drug procurement program ensures compliance with international quality, safety, and efficacy standards, providing Kazakhstan with reliable and high-quality pharmaceuticals. These efforts reinforce the country’s commitment to improving healthcare access and ensuring sustainable medical support for its citizens.
