The end of biennium results report 2022-2023 showed the significant outcomes of national health insurance expansion in Indonesia and highlighted contribution of Word Health Organization (WHO) in support this transformation.
Since 2014, Indonesia has introduced a national health insurance in 2014 called Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) to expand health insurance coverage and reduce catastrophic spending. In 2023, the JKN significantly expanded its health insurance coverage to cover over 95 percent of the population. Meanwhile, the rates of catastrophic health expenditure decreased from 4.5 percent in 2017 to 2 percent in 2021. WHO initiated several projects to support this transformation, focusing on research knowledge exchange.
Key WHO contributions include:
- Offered ongoing technical advice for JKN improvement focused on achieving Universal Health Coverage.
- Assisted in calculating national health expenditures in line with global standards and conducting research for mid-term planning, including a comprehensive background study on JKN in 2023.
- Facilitated the exchange of country experiences for strategic purchasing and is conducting an in-depth political health economy analysis to inform Indonesia’s future healthcare planning.
The WHO initiatives have supported Indonesia in addressing healthcare financing challenges, advancing towards equal access to healthcare for all its citizens. However, substantial efforts are still needed to guarantee accessibility to quality health for all.
