Many Zimbabweans regularly cross into Zambia to purchase cheaper medication. In Zimbabwe, the same medications cost around $85 per month, whereas just across the border in Livingstone, Zambia, it’s only $13, even with travel. Zimbabwe’s economic crisis has made healthcare unaffordable for many. Despite government promises to improve healthcare infrastructure, locals still rely on expensive private facilities. To curb the influx of people bringing in unregulated medications, Zimbabwean authorities have tightened border requirements, now demanding a stamped prescription from a doctor. However, Zimbabweans continue to seek affordable healthcare in Zambia, where public services are heavily subsidized, hoping for better local services in the future.
