Private\u00a0financing contributes to health expenditure via\u00a0health\u00a0insurance, fee-for-service and other types of out-of-pocket (OOP) expenditure including prepayment schemes. Pooled insurance funds finance health services via a combination of employer-employee contributions.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;TEXT &#8211; BLOCK 3&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||1em||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Health care through the public care system is <a href=\"https:\/\/conferences.sta.uwi.edu\/healthfinancing\/2019\/documents\/Healthfinancingfinalconference-DannyGill-Barbadosplanningandresearchunit.pdf\">officially free at the point of delivery<\/a> in Barbados and publicly funded (through the \u201cconsolidated fund\u201d). <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/nha\/database\/country_profile\/Index\/en\">Successive National Health Accounts<\/a> (and associated estimates) show, however, that OOP expenditure and voluntary prepayments (private insurance) have consistently contributed 40% or more to health expenditure for the last two decades.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;TEXT &#8211; BLOCK 4 &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||1em||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hia.paho.org\/en\/countries-22\/barbados-country-profile\">Domestic general government health expenditure accounted for 3.75% of GDP<\/a> (below the 6% recommended by the Pan American Health Organization) in 2020, and, in 2021, OOP expenditure was 38.9%\u00a0of current health expenditure.<sup><a href=\"#2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development estimates suggest that 16.4% of the population of Barbados may be spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/docserver\/e22c8d68-en.pdf?expires=1727189967&amp;id=id&amp;accname=guest&amp;checksum=64D28B4896974665AF80EB37F8F0E3B3\">more than 10% of their budget on health<\/a> (higher than the regional average), which could be pushing 1.4% of the population below the poverty line.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][ba_gradient_heading title=&#8221;Ongoing challenges and how to address them&#8221; html_tag=&#8221;h3&#8243; primary_color=&#8221;#455A64&#8243; secondary_color=&#8221;#455A64&#8243; admin_label=&#8221; HEADING (50-60 characters)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; title_font=&#8221;||||||||&#8221; title_font_size=&#8221;26px&#8221; title_line_height=&#8221;1em&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;15px||10px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/ba_gradient_heading][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;TEXT &#8211; BLOCK 5&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||1em||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>High OOP expenditure and potential for catastrophic costs remain a concern. The nation is experiencing both a demographic and <a href=\"https:\/\/p4h.world\/en\/news\/non-communicable-diseases-a-growing-burden-in-barbados\/\">epidemiological shift<\/a>, with an increasing prevalence of noncommunicable diseases.
