Sierra Leone\u2019s health sector still heavily depends on out-of-pocket (OOP) spending<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Total health expenditure <\/span>increased by 22% from <\/span>SLE 3,421 billion<\/span> (<\/span>about <\/span>$<\/span>346<\/span>.5 million)<\/span> in 2019 to SLE 4,184.5<\/span> billion <\/span>in 2020 (approximately US$ <\/span>287.5 million)<\/span>.<\/span> In 2020, the percentage of household <\/span>OOP marginally decreased from 52.9% to 52.3%<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n The country’s nominal GDP in 2020 was USD 3.9 billion<\/span>\u00a0and GDP per capita was <\/span>US$<\/span> 533<\/span>. Reforms implemented include <\/span>launch of the Free Health Care<\/span>Initiative (FHCI) in <\/span>2010. FHCI eliminated fees for basic maternal, child and primary care services for pregnant women, children under five and seniors.<\/span> Removal of these financial barriers aims, therefore, to <\/span>improve access to targeted services, especially maternal and child health services. The <\/span>road map provides steps and milestones.<\/span> It also provides a framework for critical reforms in health financing<\/span>, including a social health insurance scheme that <\/span>the country has been exploring since 2007.
