Prof Karl Lauterbach<\/strong>, Deputy of the Bundestag (German Parliament) and Health Systems Expert<\/em><\/p>\n

Lauterbach studied human medicine<\/u><\/a> at the RWTH Aachen University<\/u><\/a>, University of Texas at San Antonio<\/u><\/a> and University of D\u00fcsseldorf<\/u><\/a>, where he graduated. From 1989\u20131992, he studied health policy and management as well as epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health<\/u><\/a> in Boston<\/u><\/a>, graduating with a Doctor of Science<\/u><\/a> in 1992. From 1992\u20131993, he held a fellowship at the Harvard Medical School<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since 1998, Lauterbach has been director of the institute of health economy and clinical epidemiology at the University of Cologne<\/u><\/a> and was appointed adjunct professor at the Harvard School of Public Health<\/u><\/a> in 2008. He was a member of the Sachverst\u00e4ndigenrat zur Begutachtung der Entwicklung im Gesundheitswesen<\/em> (the council of experts advising the federal government on developments in the German healthcare system) from 1999 until he was elected to the Bundestag<\/u><\/a> in September 2005. He was a member of the R\u00fcrup Commission<\/u><\/em><\/a>, a committee of experts that was established to review the financing of the social insurance systems.<\/p>\n

Lauterbach made his entry to the Bundestag with a direct mandate by winning in his electoral district Leverkusen \u2013 Cologne IV<\/u><\/a> at the 2005 federal elections<\/u><\/a>. Between 2005 and 2013, he served on the Health Committee.<\/p>\n

Appointed by Federal Minister of Health<\/u><\/a> Hermann Gr\u00f6he<\/u><\/a>, Lauterbach served as member of an expert commission on the reform of Germany\u2019s hospital care from 2015 until 2017<\/p>\n
