In a move to support Africa\u2019s public health independence, Angola<\/a> has committed USD 5 million to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (Africa CDC). The announcement was made by President Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o<\/a>\u2014also Chairperson of the African Union<\/a>\u2014following a high-level meeting in Luanda with Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya on 21 April 2025. The pledge highlights Angola\u2019s leadership in bolstering health security and sustainable financing amid sharp declines in external development assistance.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kaseya praised President Louren\u00e7o\u2019s vision<\/a>, calling the contribution a historic show of continental solidarity. \u201cThis commitment is not only financial\u2014it symbolises Africa\u2019s resolve to drive its health future through homegrown solutions,\u201d said Dr. Kaseya. President Louren\u00e7o further committed to convening a Committee of African Heads of State to accelerate the implementation of Africa CDC\u2019s strategy, Rethinking African Health Financing in a New Era<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The partnership also includes support for Angola\u2019s mosquito bed net production initiative, strengthening local manufacturing capacity. Additionally, Dr. Kaseya commended Angola\u2019s response to the ongoing cholera outbreak, reaffirming Africa CDC\u2019s continued financial and technical support. The collaboration reflects a bold step toward realising the New Public Health Order<\/a> and the Lusaka Agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n
