Since 2016 there has been a national policy of free healthcare for mothers and children in Burkina Faso. The government returned the fairly positive results of evaluation missions of this policy in Ouagadougou in June 2025, with some recommendations to improve effectiveness.
In June 2025, the government of Burkina Faso presented the results of fact-finding missions on the financing of the policy of free healthcare for children under five and pregnant women. This free care policy began in Burkina Faso in 2016, and the basket of care covered for mothers and children has evolved over time.
Introduced to increase access and return to health centers for pregnant women and children aged 5, the national government believes the results are positive. According to the Finance and Budget Commission (COMFIB), the implementation of the free health care policy as a social protection measure has helped to improve Burkina Faso’s health indicators.
