The experimental phase of generalized health insurance in the Comoros was launched in June 2025. This is a concrete step towards universal health coverage in the country.
In June 2025, the pilot phase of generalized health insurance in the Comoros was agreed between the health authorities, the Fédération National de Mutuelles and the Agence Français de Développement, with funding of €687,768. This project is based on the government’s announcement at the end of 2024 of its intention to establish a health insurance scheme to achieve health coverage for the entire population by 2030.
Comoros’ Secretary General of Health, Dr Ben Imane Issa, hailed the initiative as a “significant step forward in the realization of social protection in the field of health”. The initiative is also expected to provide better protection against financial risk for the Comorian population, and equitable access to healthcare.
