Using European Union funds to improve access to community-based mental health care: lessons from Czechia

Czechia has established 29 community mental health centres (CMHCs) using EU funds, bringing together health and social care professionals to provide comprehensive, person-centred services for people with severe mental health conditions. These centres have improved access to care, enhanced quality of life, and reduced psychiatric hospitalizations. However, challenges such as limited domestic funding, workforce shortages, pay disparities, and weak political and legislative support continue to threaten their sustainability and expansion.
