Angola pledges USD 5 million to Africa CDC, advancing African-led health financing strategy

Angola commits USD 5M to Africa CDC, reinforcing African-led health financing, local manufacturing, and cholera response efforts, under President Lourenço’s leadership.

In a move to support Africa’s public health independence, Angola has committed USD 5 million to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The announcement was made by President João Lourenço—also Chairperson of the African Union—following a high-level meeting in Luanda with Africa CDC Director General Dr. Jean Kaseya on 21 April 2025. The pledge highlights Angola’s leadership in bolstering health security and sustainable financing amid sharp declines in external development assistance.

Dr. Kaseya praised President Lourenço’s vision, calling the contribution a historic show of continental solidarity. “This commitment is not only financial—it symbolises Africa’s resolve to drive its health future through homegrown solutions,” said Dr. Kaseya. President Lourenço further committed to convening a Committee of African Heads of State to accelerate the implementation of Africa CDC’s strategy, Rethinking African Health Financing in a New Era.

The partnership also includes support for Angola’s mosquito bed net production initiative, strengthening local manufacturing capacity. Additionally, Dr. Kaseya commended Angola’s response to the ongoing cholera outbreak, reaffirming Africa CDC’s continued financial and technical support. The collaboration reflects a bold step toward realising the New Public Health Order and the Lusaka Agenda.
