The Prime Minister of Belize announces full National Health Insurance (NHI) rollout by the end of 2025. The NHI has been implemented in phases and now will reach the entire population with the goal of bringing affordable quality health care to all Belizeans.
In May 2025, Belize Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed that the National Health Insurance (NHI) program will be rolled out in the entire country by the end of the year. Since the original pilot in 2001, the NHI has been gradually implemented in phases across select regions and provides a package of health services to Belizeans at little no cost.
The strategic plan 2023- 2027 outlines the roll out plans as well as sustainable financing goals and governance aspects. When fully rolled out, the NHI program is expected to cover primary care services including general medical consultations, diagnostics, medications, maternal and child health, and management of chronic illnesses. Government sources indicate that further improvements in digital health records and service monitoring will be integrated to ensure transparency and accountability.
