Côte d’Ivoire: Targeted free healthcare explained

On February 16, the Ivorian Minister of Health unveiled the new measures that will be implemented, following the end of the generalized free health care scheme that has been in place in the country for the past 10 months.

To this end, Thérèse N’DRI YOMAN invited the media to a press conference with two items on the agenda:
– The end of generalized freebies and the beginning of targeted freebies
– Practical details of how to implement the targeted free service

Among other things, these new reforms show that, for the general population, free access applies to :
– The first 48 hours of medical – surgical emergencies,
– Treatment of malaria once the diagnosis has been confirmed,
– In addition, there is a 30% discount on the cost of all procedures over 1,000FCFA. This means that the adult patient will have to pay 70% of the cost of benefits.
