ECLAC and PAHO call for prioritization of health investment in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) called on the countries of the region not to postpone investments in health.

The publication highlights the urgency of investing in health systems in Latin America and the Caribbean to reduce inequality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Coronavirus pandemic 2019 (COVID-19), together with the development crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean, have generated a situation that threatens the achievement of the SDGs in the region.

According to ECLAC projections, only 22% of the SDG targets will be met by 2030. Forty-six percent require greater speed to be met by 2030 and 32% will not be met.
