EU, Africa partner on stronger health systems and social protection

The European Union (EU) and African Union (AU) launched four new initiatives to improve health systems and social protection in Africa. These initiatives are part of the EU’s Global Gateway investment strategy.

Three health-focused initiatives aim to:

  • Strengthen health security: This €123 million initiative focuses on preventing infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance in Africa.
  • Support public health institutes: This €50 million initiative aims to improve training and research capabilities of African public health institutions.
  • Boost digital health: This €87 million initiative will support using digital technologies to improve healthcare access and pandemic preparedness.

A social protection initiative focuses on strengthening social safety nets in Sub-Saharan Africa through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

These initiatives highlight the EU and AU’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage and building stronger health systems in Africa.
