Gavi and the Asian Development Bank sign an agreement to expand health financing, support vaccine access, and strengthen health systems across 32 countries in Asia and the Pacific.
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed a major new cooperation agreement to scale up sustainable health and immunisation financing across Asia and the Pacific. The partnership aims to support countries in expanding vaccine coverage, developing robust immunisation policies, and adapting health systems to growing climate-related and fiscal pressures.
With ADB boosting its lending capacity by US$100 billion and Gavi entering its most ambitious strategic period yet, the collaboration comes at a critical juncture. Gavi’s new report outlines how closer partnerships with multilateral development banks can unlock capital to build stronger, self-sustaining immunisation programmes. The alliance builds on earlier joint efforts that mobilised over US$640 million for COVID-19 vaccines, now with an eye on long-term pandemic preparedness.
“Smart, sustainable investments in immunisation strengthen not only public health but also economic resilience,” said Dr Sania Nishtar CEO of Gavi. With 19 countries already self-financing their programmes, the ADB-Gavi partnership will help others access tailored loan and technical assistance packages. This marks a pivotal step in ensuring that vaccine equity and universal health coverage remain achievable amid today’s fiscal challenges.
