The Montreux Collaborative has published a new blog titled “Greater Together: Taking Joint Action to Accelerate PFM Reform for Health,” authored by Hélène Barroy, Moritz Piatti, Jennifer Asman, Eric Boa, and Rosemary Owino. This blog underscores the critical role of public financial management (PFM) in enhancing health systems and achieving universal health coverage (UHC).
Global and regional studies indicate that robust PFM systems are linked to lower maternal, under-five, and non-communicable disease mortality rates. Since 2014, the World Health Organization has spearheaded the Montreux Collaborative, promoting knowledge sharing and elevating the PFM for Health agenda.
The blog highlights efforts to adapt public finance systems in low- and middle-income countries to make them more responsive to UHC needs. The COVID-19 pandemic emphasised the importance of agile PFM systems for efficient resource allocation during crises. The Lusaka Agenda and alignment initiatives by key partners like the Global Fund and Gavi are also discussed.
The P4H Network plays a vital role in this collaborative effort, contributing to peer learning and supporting coordinated reforms. The next Montreux event, scheduled for November 2025, will bring together global efforts to advance PFM and health financing reforms, furthering the goal of UHC.
