In 2019, the WHO developed a Health Financing Progress Matrix for countries to assess how far they have come in preparing their health financing systems to achieve financial risk protection and attain progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Sierra Leone has become the first country globally to publish its Health Financing Progress Matrix report. The results of the assessment shows that for Sierra Leone to attain UHC, there is need to improve the pooling and purchasing functions of its health financing system. However, the good news is that both pooling and purchasing can be addressed with ongoing reform efforts focusing on establishing a social health insurance scheme with the main objectives of improving equity and efficiency while rationalizing and better implementing the Free Health Care scheme.
