Strengthening PHC Financing through Ministries of Health and Finance collaboration

Botswana’s Interministerial Meeting held on 15-18 April 2024,  supported by PROPEL Health and AERC, prioritizes primary healthcare (PHC) financing for Universal Health Coverage, fostering collaboration for sustainable health systems.

The Botswana Interministerial Meeting was held on 15-18 April 2024 at the Phakalane Hotel, hosted by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) with support from PROPEL Health, a USAID-funded project implemented by Palladium. The meeting convened stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and academia to strengthen health systems and financing mechanisms.

Dr. Abbi Kedir, Acting Executive Director of AERC, underscored the importance of prioritizing health system strengthening over crisis response. Moses Keetile, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, emphasized Botswana’s commitment to primary healthcare (PHC) delivery, crucial for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). An integral component of the meeting is the Inter-Ministerial Policy Dialogue, focusing on resource mobilization, allocation, and utilization for improved PHC outcomes. Round table discussions between the ministries of health and finance aim to enhance collaboration and strengthen PHC financing mechanisms.

The Botswana Interministerial Meeting marks a significant milestone in advancing equitable health financing strategies, laying the groundwork for sustainable PHC delivery and improved health outcomes in the country.
