Tanzania, Korea explore ways to make UHC work

Tanzania has partnered with Korea’s KOICA to enhance its health sector through a knowledge-sharing initiative, focusing on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and technical assistance from Korea’s Q-Deep program. The collaboration aims to develop a comprehensive implementation strategy to support the realization of UHC in the country.

The government of Tanzania, in collaboration with Korea’s international agency KOICA, has initiated a knowledge-sharing program aimed at enhancing the country’s health sector. During a recent workshop in Dodoma, KOICA Country Director Manshik Shik discussed the significance of Korea’s Q-Deep program, which provides technical assistance to partner nations, including Tanzania.

The program aims to improve development cooperation by sending professionals to support partner countries according to their specific needs. Korea’s National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), in partnership with KOICA Q-Deep, the Ministry of Health, and the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), is conducting preliminary studies on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as part of an eight-month project initiated in October 2024.

This collaboration aims to establish a robust foundation for UHC in Tanzania by developing a long-term implementation strategy. The technical assistance focuses on key areas, including government support through analysis of existing UHC models, policy planning, and capacity building within the Ministry of Health and NHIF. Recently, a draft mid-term implementation roadmap was shared with government stakeholders in Dodoma, introducing strategic recommendations for UHC, such as automatic enrollment using national IDs, mandatory registration, subsidies for vulnerable groups, digital innovations in healthcare delivery, and insurance payment reform.

As the project approaches completion, NHIS, MOH, and NHIF are finalizing a comprehensive UHC roadmap, with Korea reaffirming its commitment to support Tanzania’s goal of achieving universal health coverage.
