The European Investment Bank loaned €100 million to Finland for the Laakso hospital complex in Helsinki

The European Investment Bank (EIB) commits €100 million for the construction of state-of-the-art Laakso Joint Hospital in Helsinki. The services will include psychiatric and neurological treatment, rehabilitation, geriatric and palliative care. The loan builds on EIB’s track record of supporting Finnish hospitals.

As reported by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the EIB is providing €100 million in financing for the development of the Laakso Joint Hospital complex in Helsinki, marking the first installment of a total of €480 million approved for the project. This state-of-the-art hospital will integrate psychiatric, neurological, geriatric, palliative care, and rehabilitation services, improving medical accessibility for over 1.7 million residents in the Uusimaa region.

The project includes constructing new hospital buildings and renovating two existing ones, with completion expected by 2030. The facility will feature specialized units such as mental health and neurology wards, outpatient centers, a drug addiction center, an eating disorders department, and dedicated services for adolescent and children’s mental health. The hospital will also provide palliative care and house advanced rehabilitation facilities. Strategically located, it will connect to the Helsinki University Hospital via an 800-meter tunnel, ensuring seamless access to specialized care.

The project is a collaboration between the City of Helsinki and HUS Group, representing one of the largest hospital undertakings in Finland, with an estimated cost of €1 billion. Marko Virtanen, CEO of the real estate company managing the project, emphasized the importance of securing financing for its smooth progression.

The EIB, which has provided over €2.5 billion in funding to Finland’s health care sector in the past 20 years, sees the project as part of its mission to improve lives through long-term, favorable financing. The investment aligns with the EIB’s broader objectives of fostering innovation, enhancing healthcare infrastructure, and promoting social resilience in Europe.

The EIB also has a strong commitment to climate sustainability, aligning all its projects with the Paris Climate Accord. Over half of its annual financing supports climate change mitigation and environmental health projects. In 2023, the EIB pledged nearly €1 billion in financing for projects in Finland, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and innovation in the region.

The Laakso Joint Hospital project represents a significant step in improving health care delivery in Finland, centralizing services in a modern facility designed to support collaboration among healthcare professionals and provide accessible, high-quality care for its population.
