WHO releases 2025 update of the global health expenditure database

WHO has released updated health expenditure data for 190+ countries, including new visual dashboards and technical resources, covering spending trends from 2000–2023.

The World Health Organization has officially launched the 2025 update of the Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED), offering newly refreshed data for more than 190 Member States and territories. The update spans the years 2000–2023 and includes detailed spending estimates across health care functions, primary health care, provider types, disease categories, and under-5 population needs. Health capital investment data has also been expanded, strengthening the evidence base for policy and planning.

To support users in navigating this extensive dataset, WHO has released updated Country Profiles—interactive dashboards that present national health expenditure patterns at a glance. These visualizations allow users to explore revenue sources, government spending levels, prioritization trends, out-of-pocket payments, and allocations for specific health services. The presentation from the launch webinar is also publicly available for those who could not attend.

A comprehensive set of methodological notes, technical guidelines, learning resources, country reports, and supplementary datasets is accessible through the GHED Documentation Centre. WHO encourages continued engagement, feedback, and use of these resources to inform stronger, data-driven health financing policies worldwide.
