ILO, with P4H, facilitated an event from 11-14th December 2023 to train NHIMA staff to monitor social health insurance schemes. NHIMA drives UHC efforts in Zambia via NHIS, extending coverage to vulnerable populations. Effective monitoring is crucial for pilot phase decisions.
The ILO Country Office for Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique in collaboration with P4H, conducted a capacity-building activity for Zambia’s National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) staff on the monitoring and evaluating of the social health insurance schemes. The objective of the training was to enhance NHIMA’s staff’s internal capacity for monitoring the scheme’s performance, particularly in light of the ongoing pilot project of extension of coverage to the beneficiaries of the Social Cash Transfer.
NHIMA serves as Zambia’s public health insurance provider, tasked with leading Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) efforts through the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Its responsibilities include providing access to quality healthcare services through strategic purchasing arrangements with accredited public and private health facilities. NHIMA is also mandated to extend coverage to vulnerable populations, with the current pilot initiative aiming to enroll about 16,000 households in the scheme, with contribution subsidies supported by the Global Fund. Effective monitoring of the scheme during this pilot is essential to provide key indicators to inform policy and program decisions regarding coverage extension
