The health care system in Guatemala is comprised of the public sector, including the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala, the Guatemalan Institute of Social Security Institute (IGSS), the Guatemalan Military Medical Service, and the National Civil Police Hospital; and the private sector. The IGSS covers 18% of the population. National coverage of essential services for 2019 was estimated at 57%.
In 2020, public spending on health represented 2.48% of GDP and 15.86% of total public spending. The health care system is primarily financed by out-of-pocket spending, accounting for 56% of total health spending (2020); in 2014, catastrophic health expenditure was estimated at 11.5% of total household spending.
