Nicaragua’s health care system is composed of the public subsystem, which includes the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua, the Nicaraguan Social Security Institute, the Army Medical Corps, and the National Police Medical Services; and the private subsystem. Coverage for essential services for 2021 was 70.3%.[1]
Public spending on health represented 5.3% of GDP, below the 6% recommended by the Pan American Health Organization and 18.4% of total public spending for 2020.[2] Out-of-pocket spending on health amounted to 30.8% of current spending on health for 2020, and catastrophic health expenditure in 2020 was estimated at 24.7%.[3]
