Citizen participation in the political economy of primary healthcare financing in Nigeria: a cross-sectional survey

Published in Discover Health Systems by Springer Nature, the open-access article “Citizen participation in the political economy of primary healthcare financing in Nigeria: a cross-sectional survey” explores the critical role of civic engagement in shaping healthcare funding priorities. Authored by Emmanuel Onu Alhassan and Olympus Oyewole Ade-Banjo, the study responds to longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s health financing system, which continue to impact health outcomes across the country.

Using a modified two-sided stakeholder model, the researchers surveyed 400 citizens and civil society organisations (CSOs) to assess perceptions, priorities, and participation levels related to primary healthcare financing. The findings reveal widespread support for universal health coverage, yet highlight limited public awareness and engagement in policy processes—especially among youth. The study concludes that improved coordination between CSOs and citizens is essential to enhance civic influence on health policy and to close the gap between public expectations and government priorities in primary healthcare.
