T20: Defining sustainable finance for health: A common taxonomy to mobilise global investment

The policy brief, published on 10 November 2025 under the Financing for Sustainable Development Task Force of the T20, a network of think tanks supporting the G20, responds to the sharp rise in private health investment since COVID-19, with healthcare private equity reaching USD 480 billion between 2020 and 2024. Despite this surge, many in the health sector remain unaware of its scale or implications. Recent G20 Presidencies—Italy, Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa—have increasingly recognised that health is not only a public sector responsibility but also a core driver of economic resilience, financial stability, and security.

Authored by Hatice Beton, Dr Roberto Durán-Fernández, Dr Dennis Ostwald, Prof Dr Rifat Atun, and Dr Hasbullah Thabrany, the brief urges the G20 to adopt a shared definition of sustainable finance for health and to promote national or regional health taxonomies. These tools can align policymakers and investors, guide strategic decisions, and support systematic assessment of health-related risks within macroeconomic frameworks such as IMF Article IV consultations.
