A new open-access research article published in the International Journal for Equity in Health examines Somalia’s progress toward achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in the context of ongoing fragility and conflict. Titled “Universal health coverage in fragile and conflict-affected States: insights from Somalia,” the study, authored by Zlatko Nikoloski, Mubarik M. Mohamoud, and Elias Mossialos, presents an updated assessment of Somalia’s health system, using a UHC index that evaluates access to essential health services and financial protection.
The authors identify persistent inequities linked to socio-economic status, education, and health infrastructure, and highlight the heightened risk of catastrophic health expenditures among the poorest populations. Despite formidable challenges, the study offers valuable insights into the structural barriers to UHC in fragile states and calls for targeted policy responses to improve healthcare access and equity.
