In a significant move toward bolstering health security in Africa, the African Union, Gavi, and Japan have committed to deepening their collaboration to address Africa’s most urgent health priorities. At a thematic event during the 2024 Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting, leaders from these regions and organizations outlined how sustainable financing, partnerships with the private sector, and Japanese innovations can support African countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
According to a recent Gavi article, this renewed commitment comes at a critical time as rising outbreaks and rapid population growth heighten the need to protect communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. Gavi, with the support of donors like Japan, has already helped immunize over 1 billion children globally, averting more than 11 million deaths in Africa alone through routine immunization. This collaboration aims to build resilient health systems and ensure equitable access to healthcare across the continent.
