In 2023, healthcare expenditure in France will reach €325 billion, up 3.5%, driven by hospital care and drugs. Outpatient care continues to lag behind. Out-of-pocket expenses will fall to 7.5%, thanks to the 100% health plan and increased support from the French health insurance system.
The Direction de la recherche, des études, de l’évaluation et des statistiques (Drees) presents the results of the health accounts for 2023. In 2023, current healthcare expenditure in France will amount to €325 billion, up 3.5% on the previous year. This growth is mainly driven by the consumption of healthcare and medical goods (CSBM), which reaches €249 bn, sustained by hospital care and innovative drugs. Conversely, spending on preventive healthcare fell back to pre-health crisis levels.
The structure of spending has been modified by the health crisis, with the share of hospital care rising from 36% in 2019 to 38% in 2023. Ambulatory care, although recovering, has not yet returned to pre-crisis levels, accounting for 22% of total expenditure. Spending on long-term care remains stable.
Out-of-pocket expenses for households fell slightly to 7.5% of total expenditure, thanks in particular to the gradual introduction of the 100% health plan and increased funding of hospitals by the French health insurance system.
