Federal budget gives$2.3 billion boost to mental health services, with bulk going to diagnosis and treatment centres

The recently announced federal budget of Australia has among other healthcare initiatives, taken a special interest in mental health services, treatment centres and suicide prevention efforts. Of the $2.3 billion over 50% is going to a network of Commonwealth-funded mental health centres, specialising in diagnosis and treatment of conditions in adults, youth and children.

A keen player in digital health services, the government has earmarked $249 million to digital mental health services allowing counselling and support online.

Mental Health is an important part of the definition for ‘Health for all’ and to this effect Australia is making significant progress. The COVID 19 Pandemic has also made such investment crucial and the country must look forward to more such funding.
