Gavi’s Day Zero Financing: A Shield for Future Pandemics

The First Response Fund aims to secure immediate vaccine access and protect routine immunisation during major health emergencies.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has launched a US$ 500 million First Response Fund to ensure rapid vaccine access and protect immunisation programmes during health emergencies. This initiative addresses delays seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for low-income countries.

The fund aims to provide surge financing within days of a pandemic declaration, securing vaccine doses and supporting delivery systems. “No other mechanism offers funds ‘at risk’ to help lower-income countries secure early access to vaccines,” said David Kinder, Gavi’s Director of Development Finance.

Part of Gavi’s Day Zero Financing Facility, the fund aims to reduce deaths and economic impacts significantly in future pandemics. “Having this funding in place early could cut deaths by up to 74% and economic costs by 95%,” noted Charles Bleehen, Gavi’s Head of Development Finance.

With this fund, Gavi seeks to ensure swift and equitable vaccine distribution, enhancing global preparedness for future health crises.
