GIZ informs P4H partners regarding Cameroon plans – July 2012

The German technical cooperation (GIZ) informs P4H partners of its plan to support a multi-stakeholder workshop on the role of community-based health insurance (CBHI) in the transition to universal health coverage (UHC) in Cameroon, and invites the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Welfare, Ministry of Finance, Parliament, CBHI schemes, and development partners, etc. to participate.

The main conclusion of the workshop is that CBHI schemes don’t usually contribute significantly to the expansion of UHC if membership remains voluntary. It is suggested that Cameroon look to re-position CBHI schemes as “contracted managers” within a mandatory coverage system; they would need to be significantly reinforced to assume such a role, and be subsidized in order to stay financially viable.
