On September 11 and 12, 2024, Gabon’s capital hosted a high-level meeting on health financing. The purpose of the meeting was to sign a letter of commitment from the participating experts, setting up the mechanism for funds managed directly by the Ministry of Health.
“The high-level meeting aims to support the mobilization of alternative and sustainable resources for the health sector in Gabon, by securing the commitment of the Gabonese government and its partners for the financing of the PNDS 2024-2028, which is the main planning tool for the national health policy that the President of the Transition, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has placed among the national emergencies,” said Pr Adrien Mougougou, Minister of Health.
Several experts took part in the proceedings of this important meeting, which, according to the Minister in charge of Health, aims to strengthen the partnership between Gabon and the Global Fund, with a formal commitment by the stakeholders and an analysis of the financial landscape to strengthen the health system and make it resilient in the face of major diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, as well as health emergencies.
The meeting had several objectives. These included an in-depth review of the health sector financing landscape in Gabon; the identification and presentation of alternative and innovative financing opportunities to support the health sector; and the drafting and signing of a letter of commitment from the Gabonese government in the fight against the three diseases supported by the Global Fund.
