Event description

Many people struggle to recover from the acute COVID-19 infection, suffering often disabling symptoms over a long period of time, in some cases, with long-lasting disabilities. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 10 COVID-19 patients will suffer long-term adverse effects. The understanding of this new condition, termed ‘Post COVID-19 conditions’ or ‘Long COVID’, is growing rapidly and it is becoming clear that health systems need to adjust to this increasing population health need. In this edition of the “Let’s Talk Primary Health Care” series we will discuss the service delivery implications of ‘Post COVID-19 conditions’ and, more particularly, the essential role primary health care should have in articulating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary response.

Background

European Regional Office of the WHO has established a geographically dispersed office for Primary Health Care in 2015 in Almaty, former capital of Kazakhstan. The significance of locating this Centre in Almaty is related to the origins of the legendary Alma-Ata Declaration on Primary Health Care being adopted in this city. This declaration is recognized as the “major milestone of the twentieth century in the field of public health”, and identified primary health care as the key to the attainment of the goal of health for all.

The WHO European Centre for Primary Health Care is primarily funded by the Government of Kazakhstan, which has the historic role of hosting the International Conference on Primary Health Care in 1978 in Alma-Ata, and forty years later in 2018, the Global Conference on Primary Health Care, in the new capital, marked by the adoption of the Declaration of Astana on Primary Health Care, where Member States committed to strengthening PHC as the cornerstone in achieving Universal Health Coverage and SDG’s.
