The ministry of health on 5th May, 2022 inaugurated the board of directors of the newly established National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) authority. Speaking at the event the Minister for Health Doctor Ahmadou Lamin Samateh said this move is long conceived by the government.
The scheme is set to pay for the health services bills of a person who receives health care within the minimum benefit package from health facilities contracted under the scheme. The 2021 National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) bill was passed by the national assembly. Once operational, the scheme will reduce over reliance on out-of-pocket expenditure for health which will improve financial risk protection.
