The public health insurance system in Bolivia, known as the Unified Health System (SUS), has reached 8 million members. Coverage is provided at all health levels, from primary to hospital care.
In Bolivia there is the Unified Health System (SUS), the state program with the purpose of covering all citizens with health care at the three levels, primary, secondary and tertiary in a universal, free and timely manner. Thus, SUS aims to improve the health of the population, especially those who do not have access to social security.
In April 2025, the Director of National Management of the Unified Health System of the Ministry of Health and Sports, María Bolivia Rothe, reported that there are 8 million affiliates, with an average of 5.2 patients with various pathologies each year. The health centers and second level hospitals belong to the Autonomous Municipal Governments and must be financed with 15.5% of the tax co-participation received by the municipalities. The national government finances the 39 tertiary level hospitals in various parts of the country.
