Uganda Parliament asked to reconsider National Health Insurance Bill

In March 2021, Parliament passed the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill mandating all Ugandans aged 18- years and above to contribute to access health services. However, president, Yoweri Museveni is yet to give an approval of the Bill. The speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah suggested the reintroduction of the Bill in parliament for fresh consideration.  Fredrick Makaire, the Executive Director of Save for Health Uganda a Non-Governmental Organization running a community health insurance scheme (CHIS) with 22,000 beneficiaries and the local leaders also asked the parliament to reconsider the Bill with urgency as that would allow the beneficiaries of the CHIS access better services.

Makaire said they were hopeful that once Parliament passed the NHI Bill, it would address the legal challenges and enable them to roll out  services to other areas.
