Following the global shortage of COVID-19 vaccines, the government of Ghana planned to establish a national vaccine institute. The mandate of the institute would include establishing local vaccine manufacturing plants, deepening research and development for vaccines. The president established a committee to oversee the establishment of the institute. At a stakeholders engagement meeting, the secretary of the committee Prof William Ampofo said that about US$200 million will be needed to establish the institute. The secretary further said.
This money will not come from the government. We think the key strategy will be to find money from the partnerships that are evolving. There is a lot of work going on to make sure that the institute goes through cabinet approval, secure parliamentary approval and become a reality.
