COVID-19 and progress towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in Nigeria

Nigeria like other low and middle-income countries made a commitment towards attaining UHC by 2030. The arrival of COVID‐19 poses additional pressure on the already weak health system, which in turn affects the provision of other equally important essential health services. This situation weighs most heavily on the poor (often employed in the informal economy) pushing households further into poverty. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of essential health services and the need to strengthen primary healthcare system. This commentary provides a situation analysis of the Nigerian health system’s movement towards achieving UHC.
