Details of the RIZIV care budget for 2026 in Belgium

The healthcare budget for 2026 was approved on Monday by the General Council of the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI). The budget includes an increase of 1.566 billion euros over the previous year, reflecting changes in the supply and demand for healthcare.

This week, the General Council of Belgium’sNational Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI) approved their care budget for 2026, and this was confirmed by the cabinet of the Federal Minister for Public Health. There is a 2% increase in the budget compared with 2025, corresponding to 1.566 billion euros. This increase can be attributed to multiple factors, including the increasing complexity of care, a beneficiary population with more chronic illnesses, and drug price inflation.

In addition to budget increases, greater efforts will be made to improve value for money, specifically through efficiency measures and cost control. For example, technical margins in clinical biology will be reviewed, with estimated savings of 16 billion euros. A major effort is also expected from the pharmaceutical sector, estimated at 288 million.
