In the quest to ensure financial risk protection and equal access to health services and hence achieve universal health coverage, the Gambia government initiated the introduction of the national health insurance scheme (NHIS) in 2020. The minister of health Dr. Ahmad Lamin Samateh, said that the goal of the NHIB is to protect, promote and fulfil the right to health care services for all. The implementation of the NHIS is expected to reduce out of pocket expenditures on health of which currently are estimated at 24% based on the 2017 national health accounts.
