Members of Parliament (MPs) discussed the implications of different health financing models on accessibility and quality of care in Malawi. Their debate was informed by national and international technical experts, civil society campaigners, health practitioners and community members.
The MPs generally felt that the public health sector needs to tap into the willingness of affluent Malawians to pay for high quality health services and reclaim funding that is currently going to private health care providers. Once within the public system, this funding can be used to improve and expand services for the benefit of all Malawians.
In providing the space for reaching clarity on this consensus among law-makers, the P4H Network members WHO and GIZ have paved the way for the Ministry of Health to confidently define a new health financing policy that supports the Government of Malawi in moving towards Universal Health Coverage.
