Multidisciplinary group works to strengthen Paraguay’s health system

Summary: In March 2025, a multi-ministerial group met in Paraguay, including, among others, the ministries of health and finance, to work on strengthening the healthcare system. Within 60 days, they are to propose specific measures for intensive care units.

At the request of the President of Paraguay, in March 2025, an interministerial group was formed to address the challenges of the health system. The national team includes representatives of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication, and the National Directorate of Public Contracting.
The first urgent issue is to operationalize the 40% of intensive care services that are not functional, with measures to ensure that the population can access this highly complex and costly service.

The group will work on a permanent basis with meetings every week. They will address challenges and solutions at all levels of the healthcare system, from the primary care level through the Family Health Units, regional hospitals and specialized hospitals. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Carlos Fernandez Valdovinos, assures that the national budget for health is a priority and can be modified, and even increased if necessary.
