Total Health Expenditures in Philippines increased to 5.6 percent of GDP during the COVID-19 pandemic

National Health Accounts (NHA) provide the information on flows of health financing and resource allocation of the country’s health system from both public and private health spending.

Philippines NHA showed that share of total health expenditures significantly increased from 4.7 percent in 2019 to 5.6 percent of GDP in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health spending of government schemes and compulsory contributory health care financing schemes was PhP 409.39 billion or accounted for 45.7 percent of current health expenditures (CHE) in 2020. While out-of-pocket payment (OOP) from households was PhP 400.10 billion or accounted for 44.7 percent of CHE.

Almost half of expenditures (43.8 percent) accounted for hospital care, followed by pharmacies (28.2%). To read more, please click.
