Virtual Roundtable: Strong and resilient health systems in Western and central Africa: What will it take? - P4H Network

Virtual Roundtable: Strong and resilient health systems in Western and central Africa: What will it take?

The Western and Central Africa Region and the Heath Nutrition and Population Global Practice of the World Bank are jointly organizing a high level roundtable on Strong and Resilient Health Systems in West and Central Africa during the 2022 WBG-IMF Spring Meetings.

Today, Africa is managing at least seven disease outbreaks, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic. The continent is also contending with high levels of mortality from endemic communicable diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, as well as childhood illnesses. Countries in Western and Central Africa have one of the lowest levels of health spending in the world, averaging around 1 percent of GDP. To effectively confront these health crises and achieve quality universal health coverage by 2030, it is crucial for countries to invest in strong and resilient health systems and emergency preparedness.

The discussion will draw emerging lessons from the region’s experience in disease outbreak preparedness, health systems strengthening; and identify priorities and strategies to invest in preparedness and health systems strengthening.

The event is hosted by Ousmane Diagana, World Bank Vice President for the Western and Central Africa Region. Audiences will include finance and health ministers, development partners, CSOs and the private sector.
