Oman government meets COVID 19 healthcare challenge by procuring private sector services

Oman’s public health sector partnered with private healthcare institutions that helped in lessening the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country. Private sector participation increased the country’s hospitalization capacity, handled the overflow of patients from public hospitals, and were instrumental in tracking and testing.

Oman’s Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Saeedi, says that the collaboration was effective and would continue. He also emphasizes the significance of public spending on healthcare that catalyzes all other forms of social development. The COVID 19 pandemic showed this very clearly.

Using Oman as an example of the importance of investment in healthcare, Al Saeedi points to the major improvements in people’s quality of life over the last 50 years.

A keen proponent of investing money wisely, the Minister of Health added that it is not just how much money is spent on healthcare that is important, but rather, how that money is used.

“The government’s support towards healthcare is continuous. In Oman, out-of-pocket spending is less than 12 percent, the rest of it is under the National Health Service,” he said.
